Morning sunlight shone brightly over the park, creating a surreal picture. a stream of joggers paced lazily along the path. overhead, birds were chirping softly, warmly welcoming the new day. Loud motor noises of vehicles could be heard too. In the deepest corner of the park, away from the throng of people, where wild flowers grown effortlessly, some sharp clicking noises broke over the silence at the otherwise bare trails, surrounded by undergrowth.
There, with a black Nikon held carefully in her hands, a girl was crouching over a bunch of unknown white flowers. She changed her angles from time to time, absent-mindedly brushing away her dark curls from her face. Click. click. click. Beads of sweats trailed along the side of her tanned face, unnoticed. She hummed a tune, sometimes mumbling under her breathe when she gazed thoughtfully at the innocent-looking flowers. Abruptly, she looked up. she heard whistling far ahead. She thought the tune sounded suspiciously familiar. The whistling was getting nearer, and then heavy footsteps. alarmed, she stood up quickly. the Nikon in her hand forgotten. but before she began to step away, a tall boy appeared from behind a tree. The whistling stopped. The boy froze when he noticed her. She heard a slight intake of breathe. She didn't say anything. Just stood there staring at him with wide eyes.
The boy gazed at her for what seemed like hours, then at her left-hand. She looked down. Noticed for the first time that she still had her beloved Nikon in her hand. She met his eyes. Her lips parted, but no sound came. She didn't know what to say. The boy cleared his throat. His eyes a bit glazed and there were slight flushes on his cheeks. He looked at her and said somewhat hesitantly, "Hey...em...I'm sorry. I didn't know there would be someone here. I...well...I usually came here to...you know...think." He laughed awkwardly. When she kept silent, he began to back away. He said, So...I guess...I'll leave you alone to...do your...stuff." He turned away. Then stopped when she blurted, I was taking pictures." He turned back at her.
She bit her lip. and thought, well of course you're taking pictures, you idiot! He saw the damn camera for god's sake!
Before she could make an idiot of herself, he smiled at her. He said, "Yeah? That's cool. What are you taking?" Then he held up his hand before she could reply, eyes twinkled. "Wait. Let me guess...You looked like you know what you're doing. probably a professional." She blushed and started to deny his observation but didn't get the chance when he continued. He paced slowly toward her, eyes looking around the area as if to search for something and pretended not to notice the white flowers beside her, sparkling under the sunlight.
"Hmm...and that means you're going to capture something unusual as a subject and turn it into an beautiful art. Aha!" He crouched down suddenly and took some torn old leaves near her feet in his hand. He looked up at her. "Here. You see these as a symbol of...circle of life. Yeah that's it. From unmarked and full of life to ugly, wrinkled and forgotten. Like humans. " He put one hand on his heart and the other away from him, looking at the sky. He looked like one of those old theater player presenting his piece, all dramatic, except with a bad haircut. She shook her head, lips twitched. "No? Well then..." He stood and brushed off the leaves. He was just a few feet apart from her that she could smell a fresh soapy scent mixed with his sweat. He pointed to an old log behind her. "That one then. You want to make a story of those ants working their ass off." He grinned at her, and feigned a smug look. She chuckled. She was beginning to relax with his teasing. She rolled her eyes at him.
She explained, "I was taking some pictures of these flowers." She bend and touched one of the said flowers. Her hair fell forward, framing her face. "I know it's boring and typical but I couldn't resist. They're so beautiful...especially at this time of the day. Don't you think?" She met his gaze and smiled slowly. He looked down at her for a moment, then said, "Yeah..." (to be continued...)
